FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE GEORGIAN TRIANGLE

October 20, 2008 – Georgian Triangle, Ontario - Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Georgian Triangle (BBBSGT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Karen Webb as its new Executive Director.

"BBBSGT strives to provide the highest quality mentoring relationships to the children of the Georgian Triangle", said Iona Tough, President of the Board of Directors.  "With Karen's qualifications and enthusiasm, we are thrilled that she will be heading up the organization. Our mandate is to enhance opportunities for children in our community, and Karen brings with her a set of skills that will see continued growth of this wonderful organization.”

Karen has a Bachelor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Alberta, a Hospital Departmental Management Certificate from the Canadian Hospital Association and has been awarded a Certificate of Recognition for Contribution to her profession. Karen practiced as a clinical physiotherapist, has directed a busy hospital department; led hospital and community initiatives and has demonstrated success taking projects from inception to implementation. In recent years Karen has become a public speaker, course instructor and an author of five books which has taken her on national media tours including appearances on Canada AM, Breakfast Television and CBC. She has lived in Thornbury since 1999 with her husband and twin daughters who are now in their first year of university.

In her career, Karen volunteered for the Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada assisting with fund raising for research; sat on a Statutory Committee for the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, served as a member, Board of Directors Stratford YMCA and successfully raised funds for the Ontario Physiotherapy Association.

BBBSGT match Little Bothers and Little Sisters with volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters (2-4 hrs per week). Volunteer adult Mentors are matched with children for the In-School mentoring program (1hr per week) and in our literacy focused Sandparents program a senior volunteer is matched with a child in the early years (3-6 yrs). BBBSGT hosts fun group activities throughout the year for Bigs, Littles and for kids on our waiting list.  If you would like to learn more about how you can help, call or just drop by the office.  Karen Webb our new ED and the caseworkers are always keen to explain the programs and answer questions. Every child deserves positive role models.

According to Karen, "People would be surprised at all the activities that this organization runs.  As well as matching children with Big Brothers and Sisters, we offer mentoring programs, Kids and Cops, Camp, Homework Club and a variety of activities”.  We can always use volunteers, give us a call at 445-2330 and give a child a bit of your time!  That small commitment and believing in a child goes a long way.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Georgian Triangle is a non-profit organization; it is not a government funded agency. Funding comes from fund raising events such as Bowl for Kids Sake, and a small portion from the United Way, grant proposals which may or may not be approved and individual donations.
